Chepanile

Chinese aliases: 牡丹腈
English name: Chepanile (Peonile of Givaudan)
CAS No.: 10461-98-0
Key Characteristics

The most remarkable attribute of Peonile is its intensely vivid and intense peony-floral profile. It successfully captures the powdery-sweet, fresh, slightly green, and dewy aspects of real peony blossoms, making it an irreplaceable cornerstone in crafting peony accords.

The presence of cyano and ester groups in its molecule gives it exceptional chemical stability against light, heat, acids, and alkalis, with excellent color retention. It is also a powerful fixative, significantly extending the longevity of a fragrance.

Unlike traditional powdery notes (such as violet or iris), Peonile offers a powdery sweetness that is fresh, dewy, and transparent rather than heavy or dull. It carries an inherent “dew-moistened petal” freshness, making it particularly well suited to modern, fresh-style perfumes.

Its aroma is highly potent and diffusive, blending seamlessly with a wide spectrum of notes. It exhibits particularly strong synergy with rose, lily-of-the-valley, lilac, woody, and musky elements, enhancing both depth and richness.

Usage Recommendations and Precautions
Dosage: Its aroma is exceptionally potent, requiring only a minimal amount to make a significant impact in the final fragrance. When used as a primary note, the typical dosage is 0.5%–3%, while as a modifier, 0.1%–1% is sufficient.
Safety: It is considered safe for use under IFRA standards. While Chepanile contains a cyano group (-CN), it is safe in its bound form. Exposure to strong acids at high temperatures should be avoided, as this may generate by-products. Under normal personal-care application conditions, it is completely safe.
Blending Recommendations:
- Building a peony theme: Enriches floral layers when used as the dominant component, combined with rose, lily-of-the-valley, and lilac.
- Enhancing a fresh, aquatic character: Strengthens crisp, modern, aquatic sensation when paired with calone and other watery notes.
- Blending with woody and musky bases: Wraps a warm base in powdery-sweet florality, making the scent softer and more skin-like when combined with white musks.
- Blending with citrus: Creates a highly modern, fresh floral–fruity opening when paired with aldehydes, lemon, and pear.
