Beta-Damascenone

Chinese name: 乙位突厥烯酮|β-大马烯酮
English name: Beta-Damascenone
CAS No.: 23696-85-7 / 23726-93-4
FEMA No.: 3420
Key Characteristics

One of the lowest-threshold natural aroma compounds known; even at trace (ppb-level) concentrations, beta-damascenone markedly increases naturalness and complexity within a fragrance.

It can reproduce the natural scent of ripe fruits (such as apple, apricot, grape) and blooming roses, imparting a vivid sense of “living freshness” to a composition.

It fuses floral, fruity, woody, and oriental elements seamlessly, enhancing roundness and depth throughout the accord.

Although classified as a top-to-mid note, its exceptionally high activity allows it to influence the fragrance throughout the lifespan. A warm undertone emerges especially in the mid-to-late stages.

Its ability to impart natural ripe-fruit character makes it widely used in apple, strawberry, grape, black tea, honey, wine, tobacco, and related flavor systems.
Usage Recommendations and Precautions
Dosage: Dosage must be extremely low.
Recommended dosage in daily-use fragrances: 0.0001%–0.002% (1–20 ppm).
In edible flavor formulations, the dosage typically remains below 1 ppm and must comply with food regulations in different countries (such as FEMA GRAS).
Dilution Recommendation: It is strongly recommended to pre-dilute the material to 0.01%–0.1% to ensure accurate dosing and homogeneous dispersion.
Compatibility:
- In combination with Beta-Damascone, rhodinoll, phenethyl alcohol, and linalool, it can construct a realistic rose profile.
- With raspberry ketone and γ-Decalactone, it enhances the authenticity of fruity notes.
- With vetiver, patchouli, and amber materials, it reinforces the depth of oriental accords.

Beta-damascenone is hailed as the “golden catalyst of aromatics”.
Although used in trace amounts, it can fundamentally transform the character of a fragrance—from flat to vivid, from artificial to natural. It is employed in classic top-tier perfumes such as Chanel No. 5 and Dior J’adore. Despite its high price, its irreplaceable olfactory impact makes it a secret key for perfumers seeking to craft the “soul of a fragrance”.
